On planet Earth 828, in 1964, the world celebrated the fourth anniversary of the creation of the superhero team known as the "Fantastic Four" by astronauts Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm, and Johnny Storm, after they gained superhuman powers following exposure to cosmic rays during a space mission. Since then, the team has become a household name, battling supervillains, while Reed's inventions have advanced technology, and Sue's diplomacy, through the Future Foundation, has brought disarmament and peace to much of the world. When Reed and Sue revealed they were expecting a child, the world prepared for the arrival of the child and wondered if the child would also possess superpowers.
Months later, the Silver Surfer arrived on Earth and announced that the planet was threatened with destruction by Galactus, a planet-eating cosmic being. Reed studied the disappearances of other planets and confirmed this claim, and the team decided to find Galactus before he reached Earth. They track the Silver Surfer's energy signal and use faster-than-light (FTL) travel to reach a new planet. Upon their arrival, Galactus's ship destroys the planet, and the team is captured. Galactus reveals his insatiable hunger, which has driven him to consume planets for eons. He senses that Reed and Sue's unborn child possesses immense cosmic power and can resist Galactus's hunger, freeing himself from it. Galactus offers to save Earth in exchange for the child and urges Sue to give birth. The team refuses and escapes the ship. Using the gravity of a neutron star, which destroys their system faster than light, the team delays the Silver Surfer's pursuit and returns to Earth. Sue gives birth to a boy, Franklin, on the way.
Returning to Earth a month later, Reed reveals the details of their encounter during a press conference. His decision to save a child among the billions of people on Earth sparked widespread public outcry, with many demanding that Franklin be sacrificed to Galactus. Johnny began deciphering the Silver Surfer's native language using his interactions with her and some deep space transmissions that Reed intercepted from his planet. They also received transmissions from planets destroyed by Galactus. As Galactus approached and protests against the Fantastic Four escalated, Sue took Franklin to meet with the protesters. He explained that they would not sacrifice their son, but they would not abandon the rest of humanity either. Using a teleportation system he was working on, Reed devised a plan to build massive teleportation bridges across Earth so he could transport the entire planet to another solar system where Galactus could not reach them. Through the Future Foundation, Sue organized the nations of the world to build the bridges and conserve the energy needed to use them.
With the bridges activated, the Silver Surfer returned and began destroying them. Johnny prevented him from destroying the final Times Square bridge and revealed what he had learned from the transmission: her name was Shalla-Bal, and she had become Galactus's messenger to save her world, Zen-La. Upon hearing transmissions from the planets she had helped destroy, Shalla-Bal expressed remorse but refused to help and fled. Using Franklin as bait, the team planned to lure Galactus to the final bridge and transport him away. Sue negotiates with Harvey Elder to evacuate the citizens of New York City to his underground city of Subterranea. Galactus makes his way through the city and captures Franklin, avoiding a trap. Sue uses all her strength to push him into the portal using a force field while Reed rescues Franklin. Johnny attempts to sacrifice himself to give Galactus a final push toward the portal, but Shalla-Bal stops him. She pushes Galactus inside, and the portal closes behind them. Sue dies in her efforts, but Franklin revives her. Later, the team sets off on a new mission as the world celebrates its fifth anniversary.
In a mid-credits scene, set four years later, Sue reads to Franklin at home and goes to get another book. Upon her return, she sees him interacting with a man wearing a green cloak and holding a metal mask.
